And also, it has been suspected that they may have originated form the mastiff-type dogs that were brought by the conquistadores that were Spaniards to the Canary Islands – this is where the name Canario or Canary came from. This breed’s functions in their early existence was to guard a farm, help in wrangling a cattle and drive or kill wild and stray dogs.

There are a lot of other breeds that were most likely involved in the development of the Canary. These are the Iberian Presa – a mastiff kind of dog and different types of bulldogs that is popularly known as Alanos. Then when the British colonist arrived, another kind of mastiffs and bulldogs took a part in the background of the Canary. Bardino Mjorero, is a sheepdog that is recognized for its cleverness, bravery, guardian instincts and a remarkable set of teeth was the ultimate add up to the mix.

Canary is also widely known for taking part in dog-fighting circles which is not surprising for it has all the power necessary of the said sport. But in 1940s this act was prohibited yet it still lasted for the next 10 years surreptitiously. Due to this prohibition and the birth of other breeds that are protective such as German shepherd and Doberman pinscher which took the interest of the island dog owners, Canary’s fame declined thus its number decreased.

After couple of decade, people were again interested in the breed and started to rebuild it. In 1970s, they seek to make a dog breed that is huge, powerful, self-assured, extremely territorial, brave and tranquil – kind of dog that is persistent and that will not quit no matter how dangerous it is. The island then created a breed club during 1982. Canary played a part in American Kennel Club Foundation Stock Service from 1996 up to the present but was only recognized by the United Kennel Club in 2003.

If you would like to own a dog that is powerful, devoted and can easily become an excellent guard dog, then the Canary Dog is the best breed for you. These dogs are brave and eager to defend their master at any cost, but on the other hand, they can be very dominant and if not treated properly, they can easily become jealous and dangerous. Therefore this dog is not recommended for novice dog owners. Rules must be set and lines must be cleared for this dog to achieve pack leader status in their eyes. Early socialization and obedience training is therefore a must for them. The Canary Dog can do well with children, other dogs and smaller pets, but only if they are raised together. At least half an hour playing session and a long, daily walk is very much recommended to keep the dog healthy and happy. They can live in an apartment, but the best is to provide them at least a medium sized yard for exercises.

The coat of the Canary Dog is short and coarse to the touch. It requires weekly brushing with a firm bristle brush. The breed is a minimal shedder. These dogs are prone to health issues like hip dysplasia, epilepsy and leishmaniasis (blood parasites), so frequent visits to the vet are recommended.

Training of the Canary Dog is very hard, as the dog always tries to become dominant. Therefore training must be done with consistency, firmness, much patience and rewards.

All in all, the Canary Dog is best for experienced dog owners who will be able to become the pack leader and will provide the dog enough care and exercise to keep them healthy and happy.

I hope this short article will be able to help you decide whether the Canary Dog is the best breed for you.

This beautiful and rare breed has numerous stunning qualities, however, there are some factors we have to watch out for.

Due to its size and high energy level, the Presa Canario needs a large fence yard to be able to live happily. If you can’t provide enough area and possibility for exercises, the Presa is probably not for you.

The Canary Dog is a perfect watchdog, it is highly protective. However, if not trained properly, can be suspicious, or even aggressive toward strangers. This is why it is extremely important to start the training in time, at a very young age.

A Presa Canario probably won’t tolerate other dogs in the household, unless the other one is submissive, but this also depends on the temperament of the other dog and the level of training and socialization.

Let’s make things clear. The name of Canary Island is originated from the Latin term “Insula Canaria” which means Island of the Dogs.
When the Romans first visited this island, they found some people who truly worshipped dogs, so they named they island ‘canaari’ which means: the ones who worship dogs. The breed Canary was developed here, in the mid’ 1800’s, partly from the indigenous dog, and partly from the English Mastiff and English Bulldog. They were originally used for dog fights, so after it was banned, their number reduced significantly and the breed was near extinction in the 1960’s.
Recently they aren’t endangered by extinction, but are still considered as a rare breed.
